May 29, 2020: For Immediate Release

Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. envisions a world without oppression; a world where Black lives and Black people are respected, honored and able to exist free from state and institutional violence. Until we are able to deconstruct the structures in our society that create the conditions to harm and dehumanize Black people, we will continue to rise up in solidarity with Black community members, siblings and sisters and say;

Black Lives Matter. Black Trans Lives Matter. Black Women and Girl’s Lives Matter.

We mourn the loss of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, George Floyd,  and others known and unknown. We honor their lives. They were community members who were cared for, loved, and, like many of us, trying to survive the difficulties of this time. They were not disposable and did not deserve to be criminalized, dehumanized, and murdered by the police. We rise up in solidarity with their families, friends, and community; we name the value of their legacy.

While this grief is overwhelming, we remain grounded in our philanthropy and vision, rooted in our duty to be an active comrade in the fight; to rise up and address all forms of violence and oppression against our Black siblings.

We shall continue to mobilize our sisterhood and community by funding necessary resources provided by Black Women’s Blueprint (BWBP), OPBSI’s  National Ray of Hope Walk (ROHW) beneficiary. BWBP works tirelessly to ensure Black women and girls gain the social, political, and economic equity they deserve. They work to mitigate the harms of state  and institutional violence, gender violence, and racial violence.

BWBP’s work reminds us the time to rise up with Black women and girls is always NOW. They remind us that in our work to raise awareness of violence against women, we must address the varying ways that violence is experienced in order to create intentional efforts to address them. As we hear and respond to the urgent calls to rise up in solidarity with Black women and girls—we are honored to be organizing with them.

We have the power to create the change we want to see. We have the power to create the compassionate, equitable, and oppression-free world we envision.

We recognize many are questioning, “What can I do?” Change can only happen through collective efforts.

  • We encourage everyone to uplift organizing efforts being led by Black community members, use your social media platforms and uplift the call for demands and actions being created by and for Black Communities.
  • Take the time to research call to action initiatives happening in your local community.
  • Donate to mutual aid and/or bail-fund efforts being organized by people on the ground.
  • Take the time to educate yourself on the histories of riots and community organizing work to better inform your action(s) to support Black community members who are organizing against state and institutional violence.
  • Take a moment to research organizations like the Movement for Black Lives, BYP100, and Survived and Punished,  that are actively organizing for the freedom of our Black siblings.
  • Additionally, use people power to contact local representatives and demand the protestors and survivors who are incarcerated be free.

To better support organizing efforts we have created a toolkit that outlines a number of resources, mutual aid funds, and bail funds that directly support the organizing efforts against state and institutional violence. To access the link toolkit please click here. Additionally, if you have any issues accessing the link please email me at philanthropy@omegaphibeta.org

Now, and always, we will rise up with our Black siblings and community members and strongly encourage you to do the same.
