Meet the 2019 Golden Colibri Grant Recipient!

Since 2011, Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated’s Alumnae Association has recognized and supported the professional and academic development of alumnae members of the sorority by awarding $500 annually to one grant recipient towards the pursuit of an advanced degree, professional certification, specialization, or license. This year the grant increased to $1000! We are pleased to announce this year’s recipient: Soror Alicia Morejon of our Alpha Gamma Chapter in DC.

Soror Alicia Morejon is continuing her Law Degree and describes her first generation experience in the following ways :

“I persist at William & Mary despite it being an environment hostile for people like myself. I persist although the balance remaining from my loans after paying tuition and rent leaves me with just enough to cover my food, gas, and travel home. I persist because of my goal of learning as much as possible so that I can use my knowledge to expand access to invested legal representation for Latino communities like those within my hometown of Union City, New Jersey. It is because I have lived in the hyphen, the see-saw between cultures, that I am motivated to become a criminal defense attorney or a public defender.”

We are excited to continue to support our amazing alumnae as they continue their professional and academic development.

The purpose of the Alumnae Association is to provide a sister-support system beyond the undergraduate experience for our members that will include social, professional and other relevant activities.  The AA affords the opportunity for members to continue serving and educating the community at large through mentoring programs, education forums, and community service.   In addition, while offering outreach to undergraduate members and provide an ongoing cultural outlet to strengthen and maintain membership cohesion.
