NEW YORK, New York… February 14, 2008. For the fifth consecutive year, the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) and its affiliate members unite in their "Quest for a Million Pennies" to benefit St.Jude Children's Research Hospital – the premier center for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Discoveries at St. Jude, which are freely shared with the medical community worldwide, have revolutionized the field of medicine. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world – regardless of the family’s ability to pay. In support of the lifesaving efforts of St. Jude, members of NALFO are committed to raise funds and awareness for this notable cause.
To maximize our collective effort, the national governing boards of the NALFO organizations have solicited the participation of their respective membership to encompass all undergraduate and graduate/alumni entities. In 2007, our collective efforts raised nearly $14,000. This year, the campaign, which launched on Thursday, February 14, will extend for 10 weeks across the country with a target goal of raising $20,000.”
In a statement released by the participating organizations, the committee stated that “NALFO’s annual penny drive gives us the opportunity to work as a unified force and contribute to such a worthy cause.” In addition, NALFO Chair Yvonne Hernandez stated, “The QMP is a great project that unites all of NALFO’s member organizations for a common cause and to support a worthwhile partner like St. Jude.”
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. The purpose of NALFO is to promote and foster positive interfraternal relations, communication, and development of all Latino Fraternal organizations through mutual respect, leadership, honesty, professionalism and education. www.Nalfo.org
