First Non-National Pan-Hellenic Council Step Team to Place at the Annual Competition

New York, NY - January 2, 2007 - The National Step Team (NST) of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (OPBSI), known as the Soul Steppin' Divas, once again made history on January 1, 2007, by winning first place at the Annual StepCorrect National Competition at the Amazura Entertainment Complex, in Queens, New York. As an event primarily targeted to National Pan-Hellenic Council member organizations, the Soul Steppin' Divas competed against Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated for the winning title.

As in their three-peat champion performances at the National Latino Step Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, the Soul Steppin' Divas integrated their stepping precision with their unique, Latin-flavored style. The ultimate success of the StepCorrect Championship performers, Vinely Cruz, Erica Diaz, Desiree Lopez, Julissa Martinez, Jessica Morales, Jessica Toro, and Joanne Veras, reflected OPBSI’s determination to set the standard of being one of the premiere Latina-oriented sororities in the nation.

"We are still amazed with what we have accomplished together as a team. Although preparing for this competition has been quite challenging, winning this title has made all of the sacrifices worth it! We are ready to take on the responsibility of being recognized as the best step team in the nation. But, for now, we will just take a moment to relish in our success and enjoy the kick off to 2007," said Erica Diaz, NST Step Coordinator.

"Stepping is a craft that we have been studying and perfecting for over nine years. Our creative influences, techniques, and style have been developed and integrated with the principles of stepping. It is wonderful to know that we were judged on and recognized for our expertise and creativity," said Jessica Morales, NST Step Choreographer.

2006 has been a phenomenal year for the Soul Steppin’ Divas, who were featured live on MTV’s TRL in promotion for singer Beyonce’s B-DAY album release in September, are currently being featured in a documentary for a major television company, and won first place in December for a semi-finalist spot at one of StepCorrect competitions leading up to the January Championship. The new year has just begun but the Soul Steppin' Divas already have events planned. For more information on their upcoming shows and highlights, please visit www.OmegaPhiBeta.org, or contact NST Step Coordinator Erica Diaz at BOAStepTeam@OmegaPhiBeta.org.

Soul Steppin’ Divas - NST of OPBSI was established in the summer of 1999, under the direction of Jessica 'Remo' Morales. The NST was soon recognized as the Soul Steppin’ Divas. Since then, the NST has become an integral part of the Latino Step community, continually placing importance on the art of stepping.

OPBSI is a Latina-oriented sorority founded on March 15, 1989, at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Seventeen women of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds came together to defy the injustices suffered by women, especially of color, in the academic, professional and political arenas. The purpose of OPBSI is to serve and educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. As positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors.
