OPBSI Partakes in the NYC Gay Pride Parade
NEW YORK, New York... July 1, 2008. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (OPBSI) joined the affinity group of NBC Universal, OUT@NBCU, at the NYC Gay Pride Parade this past Sunday, June 29, 2008. The parade started on 52nd Street and 5th Avenue, where it ran all the way to 7th Avenue South. Walkers included employees, who were joined by family and friends. June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Month. OPBSI celebrates Gay Pride month during the month of June every year with programming and events, however this is the first year OPBSI partake in the NYC Gay Pride parade. "We support the gay community. Not only are some of our family and friends gay, some of our sorority sisters are Lesbians and Bisexuals as well. We take pride in supporting our sisters," says Betty Diaz, Vice President of Programming, National Council of Officers. "It meant a lot to me having our organization march in the parade for the first time," says Ann-Gel Palermo, a proud lesbian, member of OPBSI, and former National President of the organization OPBSI will continue to partake in the NYC Gay Pride parade and stand in solidarity with our LGBT members, friends, and allies in the struggle toward equality and liberation. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, a NALFO organization member, is a Latina-oriented sorority founded on March 15, 1989, at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Seventeen women of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds came together to defy the injustices suffered by women, particularly women of color, in the academic, professional and political arenas.
