Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated serves abroad!
NEW YORK, New York… June 18, 2008. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and a Peace Corps volunteer, Alicia Srinivas, have partnered to fundraise and purchase supplies for a sustainable clean up project in a small rural community in the Dominican Republic. OPBSI has set a goal to raise $2,000 as part of the 5-for-5 Campaign: Dominican Republic ‘Clean Up’ Project. The 5 for 5 Campaign encourages everyone to donate $5 towards the project for the next five weeks beginning Thursday, June 5, 2008 and concluding on Thursday, July 10, 2008. OPBSI launched the campaign with an after work ‘artist showcase’ event, held at a lounge in lower Manhattan, on June 5, 2008.The event attracted over 100 attendees and members fundraised an amazing $300.00 plus. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was moved by Ms. Srinivas request to help organize a project that would provide environmental awareness to the residents, help reduce health risks among children, and afford support for the purchase of materials to create a better environment for the small coastal town. Ms. Srinivas stated, “Almost all of the children suffer from parasites and have had Typhoid fever, both of which can be attributed in part to them playing barefoot among the trash. This rural community is located in front of the beach, and as a consequence, all the trash that is left of the street eventually ends up in the ocean, threatening the fragile marine ecosystem, as well as the two main sources of income here – fishing and tourism.” The Peace Corps is an organization/agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 74 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment, and information technology. Like the Peace Corps, Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is also a change agent for improving the environment, serving and educating the community, and promoting an understanding of all people.
