NEW YORK, New York… June 5, 2008. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated chapters and sisters have received university wide recognition for academic excellence, community service, and leadership endeavors at their respective institutions. Over 20 institutions, Greek organizations, and student organizations awarded our chapters, colonies and sisters for their tireless efforts and continuous support for the 2007-2008 academic year. As OPBSI nears its 20th year anniversary, it is with excitement and admiration that they honor and rejoice the excellent work that contributes to the fulfillment of the values, goals, and mission of the organization.

Some of the many organizations that awarded OPBSI this year consisted of Brooklyn College, The National Pan-Hellenic Council at DePauw University, the Black/Hispanic Alumni Association of Hostra University, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated of St John’s University, Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Sorority, Incorporated of SUNY Stony brook, The Office of Student Life of SUNY College at Buffalo, The Kaideans Society of the University of Rochester, SUNY New Paltz, The National Residence Hall Honorary Association at Cornell University, the Latino Greek Council of SUNY Binghamton, and the Multicultural Greek Council of the University of Southern California!

A number of awards included Certificate of Appreciation, Outstanding Achievements and Contributions throughout the Year, Breakthrough Organization of the Year, Excellence in Educational Programming, Sorority of the Year, Excellence: Diversity Encouragement Award, Scholastic Cup, Highest grade point average, Advisor of the Year, and Greek Member of the Year. The Vice President of Operations for the National Council of Officers of OPBSI, Monserrat Cabral stated, “The hard work that our collegiate chapters and colonies do is exemplary! Everyday the phenomenal women that compromise these entities not only balance their personal, academic, and organizational lives – but they find a way to hold the values of OPBSI to such a highest esteem, that it does not go unnoticed by others!”

Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, a NALFO organization member, is a Latina-oriented sorority founded on March 15, 1989, at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Seventeen women of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds came together to defy the injustices suffered by women, particularly women of color, in the academic, professional and political arenas. The purpose of OPBSI is to serve and educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. As positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors.
