September 15, 2007...As part of Latino Heritage Month, Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (OPBSI) highlights two exceptional members that have gone above and beyond to celebrate their Latino pride. Both of these women are two of the many role models in OPBSI, who have devoted their time and effort to serving and educating our communities.
Caridad De La Luz a.k.a La Bruja (Poet, Writer, Actor, Singer and Activist) has long been regarded as one of the leading American spoken word poets. With the release of her debut album "Brujalicious", she joins the ranks of artists such as Mos Def who infuse music with the power of word. Her numerous acting credits span television, theater, and film. As a Hip-Hop/Raggaeton Artist she recorded with artists such as Fat Joe, Don Dinero, Chingo Bling. A dedicated "art-ivist", La Bruja frequently performs and leads workshops at schools, universities, hospitals, and community centers around the country. She helped raise funds for "Stop the Bombs", part of a successful campaign to close the controversial US Navy Base on Vieques Island and is the creator of the "How Can I Change The World?" writing workshop for The East Harlem Tutorial Program. In encouraging thousands to claim the benefits of art, culture, and self-expression, La Bruja continues to support positive change for the hip-hop generation. "Caridad constantly challenges the norm by being one of the few Latina women in Hip Hop and Spoken Word. She is always proud of her Puerto Rican heritage and shared that pride this past year on Fox 5 news during the National Puerto Rican Day Parade as a special guest during their live telecast. Through her Latinas 4 Life campaign, which seeks to reduce the number of young Latinas that drop out of school, Caridad also evokes pride in many young Latinas by providing hope and promoting the need for more assistance to these youth. Caridad is truly a jewel of the Latino Community, proud of her heritage, and a great representative in everything she does and all the words she shares with thousands every year", says Monica Miranda Smalls, Alpha Delta Chapter – Rochester, New York
