November 4, 2007 - Los Angeles, CA - Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (OPBSI) is proud to announce the induction of our newest chartered collegiate chapters at our National Fall Conference this past weekend. We welcome Beta Alpha Chapter at St. John's University in Queens, New York, and Beta Beta Chapter at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois.

OPBSI's collegiate chartering process requires colonized entities to fulfill specific national and university standards; thus confirming their ability to sustain our organizational goals and commitment to their local community. This year, the Colonies at St. John's University and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign both demonstrated their fulfillment of these standards and officially gained full chapter status at OPBSI's National Fall Conference on November 2, 2007 in Los Angeles, California.

The Beta Alpha chapter was first colonized on December 15, 2002 by four women of Latino descent, who wanted to make a difference in the St.John's University community. Since then, they have managed to create signature programs on their campus, and win various awards within OPBSI such as Highest GPA and Most improved Chapter/Colony. On April 18, 2004, six more women, known as "Tierra Firma", became known as the Alpha class of Queens Colony. Always true to their beliefs and standing on "Firm Ground", these amazing women, along with the chartering members, have proven that with focus, and determination, anything is possible.

Colonized in the spring of 2006, OPBSI expanded to the Midwest through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with "Kekoa Alana" the first class to be initiated as sisters of OPBSI. Since then, these women have been recognized by the University and their Greek Council with a variety of awards. Recently and while still a colony, the Beta Beta chapter won the Berry Burst Cheerios (R) Heart Disease Nationwide Contest which consisted of a $5,000 prize donated to a charity of the chapter's choice.

Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is a Latina-oriented sorority founded on March 15, 1989, at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Seventeen women of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds came together to defy the injustices suffered by women, particularly women of color, in the academic, professional and political arenas. The purpose of OPBSI is to serve and educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. As positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors.
