October 1, 2007...Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (OPBSI) launches its annual, national ten-week 10-for-10 Campaign: Raising Funds Against Domestic Violence (DV), as part of their National Philanthropic efforts to Raise Awareness of Violence Against Women. OPBSI will begin the annual campaign with five minutes of silence at 7:17 a.m. in observation of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence's (NCADV's) Day of Unity to honor DV survivors.
Violence against women is a global pandemic. Without exception, a woman's greatest risk of violence is from someone she knows. In the United States, a woman is raped every 6 minutes; a woman is battered every 15 seconds. DV is a violation of a woman's right to physical integrity, to liberty, and all too often, to her right to life itself. The 10/10 Campaign speaks to OPBSI's effort to stop the violence that many women suffer at home.
Through this national effort, supported by local chapters and individual members, OPBSI is working to collect financial donations that will aid NCADV in their continued provision of information and assistance for those in need. OPBSI hopes to exceed the financial goal of $5,000 through $10 donations from its membership, friends and supporters. In addition, OPBSI will be selling exclusively-designed t-shirts to campaign supporters, and donating a portion of the proceeds to NCADV.
"OPBSI is aware that we have set a high fundraising goal for this national campaign. However, violence against women is an issue that we all find extremely important. By joining forces with organizations like NCADV, we are taking a step toward eradicating a global pandemic," said Betty Diaz, Director of Community Service.
Starting at an asking amount of $10
If you would like to donate a different amount, please contact CommunityService@OmegaPhiBeta.org. For additional information about the 10/10 Campaign or on how you can help NCADV, please contact Betty Diaz, Director of Community Service atCommunity Service@OmegaPhiBeta.org
Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is a Latina-oriented sorority founded on March 15, 1989, at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Seventeen women of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds came together to defy the injustices suffered by women, particularly women of color, in the academic, professional and political arenas. The purpose of OPBSI is to serve and educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. As positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors. National Coalition Against Domestic Violence is comprised of people dealing with the concerns of battered women and their families. We represent both rural and urban areas. Our programs support and involve battered women of all racial, social, religious and economic groups, ages and lifestyles. We oppose the use of violence as a means of control over others and support equality in relationships and the concept of helping women assume power over their own lives. We strive toward becoming independent, community-based groups in which women make major policy and program decisions. For further information visit: http://www.ncadv.org/
