V-Day Cast DC 2007

Mary Bender (My Angry Vagina) -
Mary lives in downtown Washington, D.C., and works for Discovery Communications as a Production Manager, working on programs that air on all of the Discovery networks. She loves to read, hang out with friends, walk around town, play Sudoku, knit, travel/study other cultures, cook and go out to eat!

Mary became involved in V-Day this year because she wanted to reach out and connect with her community, to be involved in something that really touches people, and meet all of these amazing people involved in this show!

If her vagina could talk, it would say, “Wake Up!”

Tina Bigdeli (The Memory of her Face)-
Having lived her whole life in Northern Virginia, Tina attended the University of Mary Washington (affectionately known as M-Dub) where she received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration. Tina is a member of the Xi Gamma Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Incorporated, a serviced-based multicultural interest sorority. She currently works as a Mortgage Associate at Wells Fargo, helping people realize their dreams of homeownership.

It was at Mary Washington when Tina first became involved with the V-Day movement. Four years later, her passion for the cause is stronger than ever and she continues to work towards ending violence and sexual assault. She feels that through awareness and education the cycle of violence that plagues our society can be broken.

Quotes that Tina lives by:
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
"Be the change you wish to see in the world." (Mahatma Gandhi)

If Tina’s vagina could talk, it would say: “Let the labia fly!”

Claire Marie Blaustein (Vagina Happy Fact and A Six Year Old Was Asked)-
Growing up in the "vagina happy" town of Pittsburgh, Claire was probably destined to end up here eventually. But she took a circuitous route - watching productions as a violin performance major in college, becoming Music Director for a 2005 V-Day Campaign while a Music Criticism graduate student, and now finally taking stage in D.C. Ever since that first show, she has been floored by the humor and grace with which Ensler captures the amazing women she writes about, and the incredibly talented students and community members who come together to support this cause.

And therefore, Claire’s vagina has to say "Come together...right now...over me."

Gina Deavers (The Flood and My Vagina Was My Village)-
Gina is a comedic actress. Her most recent performances include Parallel Lives at the Maryland Arts Festival, where she played 16 characters—both male and female, and Sketch 22 at the D.C. Comedy Festival. She is thrilled to be performing in this production of The Vagina Monologues and hopes it touches you the way that only live theatre can.

Gina never really listened to her vagina before being cast in this production, but she swears it whispered "Thank you for shaving" one cool summer night.

Konyka M.B. Dunson (The Little Coochi Snorcher That Could) -
Born and raised in Washington, DC, I am a radio host with WPFW's "Sophie's Parlor," a long-running women's music program and the author of the forthcoming book, “Women and Power: A Vision for Humankind.” This year, she founded Soul Song Communications and launched a new television talk show, "In-Depth with Konyka Dunson," where I hope to bring insight, inspiration, and constructive conversation to some of the most intriguing issues in our world today.

Women suffer violence across the globe, yet the issue rarely takes center stage in any national or international political debate. Konyka joined V-day to connect in spirit with the voices of women around the globe so that she may bring this power to her work and firmly place the idea in our collective consciousness that violence against women will end when we decide that it must.

A quote that Konyka lives by: "The world is changed when you let your light shine."

If Konyka’s vagina could talk, it would say: "Girl, we have so much more to do!"

Marielys Garcia (The Memory of Her Face-Spanish) -
Marielys is a 23- year old Dominican that is always in a New York state-of-mind. Currently, she teaches Spanish everyday at Thurgood Marshall Academy High School. She currently resides in PG County Maryland and loves to go out with her roommate. She loves to try different tapas restaurants in D.C.

Marielys became involved with the V-Day movement because she is passionate about educating others especially women about their worth and to inform others about the injustices that occur everyday all over the world.

One of Marielys’ favorite quotes to live by is: "Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish." (Ben Franklin)

If Marielys’ vagina could speak, it would yell "I wanna be loved."

Tiffany Cruz Gonzalez (Because He Liked To Look At It) -
Tiffany is very passionate, especially about her students. She is also very close to her family. Her heart belongs to Cali but her mind belongs to the east coast - somewhere between NYC and DC. She loves to eat, workout, dance, laugh, socialize, watch football, and shop - especially in Soho. She loves to be challenged because in the end, it makes her a better person.

Violence against women has been an issue that has always been close to Tiffany’s heart. She joined this movement because she realizes the impact that "knowledge" can embark on society. She thinks we need to make people aware of the issues women deal with on an everyday basis, throughout the world and I think this platform is perfect.

A quote that Tiffany lives by: “It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. That ripple builds others. Those ripples - crossing each other from a million different centers of energy - build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and injustice.” (Robert Kennedy)

If Tiffany’s vagina could talk, it would it say, "... unfadable, so please don’t try to fade me."

Maritza Ruby Herrera (I was 12)-
Maritza was born and raised in Maryland. She is a member of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a degree in Economics. She currently resides in Clarksburg, MD and is the Office Manager for the Montgomery Village Branch of Premier Mortgage Funding, Inc. She loves to take long walks on the beach, to dance to and listen to pretty much an eclectic mix of music, to laugh a lot either at myself or jokes, and to be involved in movements such as V-Day.

Maritza became involved with V-Day through OPBSI. Thus far, it has been a very inspiring experience and the women involved in this production are amazing.

The quote Maritza lives by: "It is what it is!"

If Maritza’s vagina could talk, it would say: "I am afraid of the dark, can I get some light please?!"

Claudine Hughes (The Vagina Workshop) -
Claudine first saw Eve Ensler perform The Vagina Monologues years ago and was struck by the power and beauty of the women and their stories - their strength, vulnerability, courage and candor. And so, when the opportunity to be involved in this presentation - with a group of wonderful, strong, sincere women - came along, she knew she wanted to be involved. Claudine hopes you are moved by the monologues as much as she was.

If Claudine's vagina says "welcome."

Kamaria Martin (Say It) -
Maryland native Kamaria taps into her inner feminist when performing in the Say It monologue and several other ensemble pieces. Her interest in women's equality peaked when she saw The Vagina Monologues performed while a student at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her post college career life has lead her to the Federal Energy Regulatory (FERC) Commission as an Energy Industry Analyst, where she aids in overseeing the energy markets and upholding FERC policy.

As in the words of Edmund Burke "All this is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing," and Kamaria hopes to do her part to educate others and share the V-Day movement.

If Kamaria's vagina could talk, it would belt out "love me!"

Jessica Philie (I was 12/ my mother slapped me/ Say It/ Ensemble) -
Originally from New Haven, CT, Jessica is a writer, performer, and communications professional living in Washington, DC. She is a founding member of the D.C. Guerrilla Poetry Insurgency and volunteers in her community. When not creating or performing, she works for a reproductive health and HIV/AIDS international development project. Her latest endeavors are learning to play guitar and writing songs. Jessica became involved with V-Day by joining this production of the Vagina Monologues.

A quote that Jessica lives by: “Do you really want to do that? Well, do it. If not, don’t.” (Gustavo E. Osorio)

If Jessica’s vagina could talk, it would say, while speaking to other vaginas, “Girls, we’ve got to fight for our rights!”

Christina Rojas (Director) -
Even though Christina’s blood runs Carolina blue, she has recently relocated to the D.C. Metro area and *love* city life. She has been blessed with a wonderful work family at Arena Stage that encourages her to pursue a life more artistic; thankfully, her family and friends hold her accountable for this creativity and wake her up in time to see it!

Christina joined the V-Day movement six years ago when a small but powerful group of college women, that she proudly calls her friends, recognized the need to give a voice to women that find it difficult or impossible to use their own. They started the V-DAY Initiative on campus, sponsored The Vagina Monologues, inspired, empowered, even startled many onlookers beyond their knowledge, and never looked back. She has been in the cast of The Vagina Monologues, has directed others in it, and has seen even more productions, and every time she is literally amazed at how beautiful and strong women truly are.

The quote that Christina lives by: “To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”

If Christina vagina could talk, it would say: “We have a lot of work to do!”

Erika Ruiz (My Vagina Was My Village-Spanish) -
Erika is Bronx-born Puerto Rican (Nuyorican) living in Washington, D.C. Currently, she works at the D.C. Housing Finance Agency, attempting and succeeding in providing more housing opportunities for DC Residents. In her spare time, she enjoys watching TV, reading, shopping, and walking. She is also the President of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Erika’s V-Day influence was through a sorority sister. She proposed that OPBSI get involved with V-Day and we did. Now, we are running with it.

A quote that Erika lives by: "It's not that serious."

If Erika’s vagina could talk, it would say: Someone knocks on the door. In a voice pretending not to be her she says, "Vagina isn't home right now, come back later."

Jessica Tennille Solomon (The Memory of Her Face) -
Jessica resides in D.C., loves to laugh at herself, finding the lesson in mistakes and a great shoe sale. She believes there is strength in sisterhood and is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. While currently working for an organization that is increasing the college enrollment rate of low-income students nationwide, she is pursuing a Masters degree in Organizational Development. Jessica would much rather be a super heroine though.

Participating in the Vagina Monologues has been a leap out of the ordinary and Jessica has not looked back. She initially became involved with V-Day because a life changing trip to the Dominican Republic with Habitat for Humanity (it was a Women's Build for women of color) provided her a chance to serve in a role that changed a whole community’s perception of what women are capable of doing.

Jessica’s mantra, courtesy of Alice Walker, is: "We are the ones we are waiting for."

Finally, if Jessica’s vagina could talk, it would say, "She's a bad mother...shut your mouth!!"

Neville Uhles (Hair and Say It) -
Currently residing in the Woodley Park area of D.C., Neville is an Internal Leadership and Organization Development Consultant with a love of photography, painting, and friendship.

Neville was drawn to V-Day as a compelling opportunity to empower women of all ages, sizes, colors, and backgrounds -- and to raise the levels of awareness and understanding in the men with whom they interact.

Neville tries to heed Gandhi's guidance to "be the change you want to see in the world."

If Neville’s vagina could talk, it would -- wait a minute, who said that her vagina can't talk? That's a bit presumptuous, isn't it?

Maria Velazquez (Unhappy Vagina Fact) -
Maria is presently working as a Research Fellow at the Council on African American Affairs.

She became involved with the V-day movement through her work as an anti-racist activist. The talents and voices of the other women involved in the cast are a constant inspiration; she's incredibly excited to be involved in the production.

Maria’s favorite quote: “Resistance is the secret of joy.” (Alice Walker)

If Maria’s vagina could say anything, it might just start singing.

Shelley Walden (I Was 12 – My Mother Slapped Me) -
Shelley works for the Government Accountability Project, a nonprofit that helps whistleblowers(www.whistleblower.org). She was born and raised in Massachusetts and currently resides in Washington D.C. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and studied abroad in Ecuador and Bolivia.

This fall Shelley saw the musical “Respect,” which tells the history of women in the past century through song. She was proud of how far women come, but realized that we still have a long way to go (just think of all the rap songs that treat women as sex objects and promote violence against females). Shelley sees V-Day as a way to celebrate and empower the feminine and hope that by participating she can help move us one step closer to a peaceful world.

Quotes that Shelley lives by: "This is for all you girls about 25/ In a little apartment, just trying to get by/ Living on, on dreams and spaghetti-o's/Wondering where you life is gonna go/This one's for the girls/Who've ever had a broken heart/Who've wished upon a shooting star/You're beautiful the way you are/This one's for the girls/Who love without holding back/Who dream with everything they have..." (Martina McBride)

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the world around you. Because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who do not believe in magic will never find it." (Roald Dahl)

If Shelley’s vagina could talk, it would sing R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Aretha Franklin style.

Maria Jose Ugalde Alcazar (I was 12 and Cunt)-
Maria Jose was born in La Paz, Bolivia. She sees that because of unbalanced social and power dynamics, our society is full of wounds, dissociation, and injustice. She does art in the name of her heart, her path, her goals as well of those of others, her healing process as well as those of anyone who, due to injustice/ruptures with the self, may have felt and seen themselves (whether covering their eyes or not) as broken, and the world’s healing/pacifying process. She paints to restore, to connect, to feel, to think, and to liberate. She sings, writes, dances, performs--breathes for that matter-- and all else, for the same reasons. This is also why she became involved in this movement and to stop violence against woman/girls, man/boys, and oneself. She admires and gets inspired by the humans who are working on this, and fight and flow for this cause.

A quote that guides Maria Jose is “the essential is invisible to the eye” by the main character in The Little Prince.

Maria Jose’s vagina would speak in symbols, rhythm, music and sensations.
