The lack of a supportive infrastructure for women at Syracuse University and in the community at large motivated five women to explore ways to establish
a unique support system that would extend beyond their years on the Syracuse campus. On December 11, 1999, these five women brought to
Syracuse University a sisterhood that would foster the growth of women, embrace one’s own cultural and ethnic identity, and promote proactive
leadership to advocate for change about the injustices historically suffered by their gender. Since then, Syracuse University and its local community have never been the same.
As members of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc the radiant sisters of Xi Chapter have been involved with many community services such as The Boys and Girls Club and "Light the Night Walk" for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. By addressing local community concerns and needs, Xi chapter has helped bridge the gap between the University and the local community that hosts the campus.
With the resources of a national organization at their disposal, Xi chapter has also organized many informative workshops such as “Latino Heritage:Win Lose or Draw”, "Are Men Dogs or Do Women Create Them", and an E5M workshop on Domestic Violence.
Chapter Cause: The Empowerment of Women
Omega Phi Beta struggles everyday to overcome the injustices and oppression of women in our society. Our cause celebrates the success of the women of our past, recognizes the accomplishments of women today, and promotes the empowerment of our future generations.
Our chapter sees a future where women are inspired by/empowered with the knowledge that they can make a difference in their relationships, their communities and in the world. Our strategy is to promote this vision by encouraging women of all ages, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds to come together and support each other in the areas of personal development and leadership. On Saturday, March 29th 2003, our chapter re-affirmed its commitment to The Empowerment of Women” by hosting our first Annual “Face to Face with the Empowerment of Women” benefit banquet.
Omega Phi Beta’s founders created an outlet for women to initiate change and Xi chapter, as a group of women, choose to stand alongside them and exemplify what our values of pride, honesty and beliefs of tradition and custom symbolize. Together and with the support of our sisters far and wide, Xi chapter will continue to help women create a powerful context around being female.
