Chapter History

Five women saw a need for change and felt that other organizations on campus, although extremely dedicated to their goals, were not what they wanted. These five women, of different national origins (Dominican, Liberian, Mexican, and Puerto Rican) wanted something, something no one had ever seen before, so after much deliberation and searching they came across Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. This is what these women wanted and felt Rutgers University needed. So after a challenging journey, on May 3rd of 2002, under the guidance of Cher Treacy (Delta Chapter) and Vanessa Santiago (Lambda Chapter), Omega Phi Beta was on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University.

Chapter Cause: Lupus

Lupus is a widespread and chronic (lifelong) autoimmune disease that, for unknown reasons, causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissue and organs, including the joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, blood, or skin. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissue. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against "self."

The diagnosis of one of the members of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at Rutgers University, Upsilon Chapter, is what motivated these women to choose Lupus as their chapter cause. These women have committed themselves to having programs to educate the Rutgers community on what Lupus is, how it affects society as a whole, and how one can find the proper resources for support.
