Theta Chapter
Est. 1998
Chapter History
In the spring of 1998, six dedicated women saw a need for an organization that would exemplify professionalism, sisterhood, and educate the Stony Brook community and the community at large. Through many trials and tribulations, overcoming adversity and defeat, on April 17, 1998 "Nacimiento" crossed over into the Radiant light. This would not have been possible without the help of the sisters from Epsilon chapter at Long Island University C.W. Post campus and for that they are forever grateful.
The six women quickly began the arduous journey of chartering the Theta Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at SUNY Stony Brook and on May 18th, 1998, Omega Phi Beta was officially recognized by the Department of Student Union and Activities at Stony Brook. Using our motto of “Serving and Educating through our Diversity” as our stronghold, we proved to be a guiding force on our campus and within the sorority and Theta Colony was granted chapter status by Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc in the Fall of 1999.
On April 9, 1999, the Alpha line of Theta chapter, crossed into this beautiful organization. Just as their name, Primogenita, foreshadowed, they brought with them vitality and energy which would prove to ensure the endurance of Theta chapter for many years to come. They vowed to further the mission and principles set forth by the charting line and to guarantee that the seeds of future generations be sewn and nurtured within the mold of the exquisite Beta woman.
The Beta Line, "Tricaribé," reached the Beta light on November 18, 2000. Through their dedication and endurance, they persevered and illuminated the Stony Brook campus with their Radiance and accomplishments.
When "Dimico," the Gamma line, crossed in November 20, 2001, it was evident that the legacy of exquisite Beta women would continue to blind Stony Brook with charisma and professionalism.
"Imaraini," the Delta line, proved that three is definitely a magic number! Having crossed in November 23, 2002, these three women continue to be the proprietors of success that Theta Chapter is known for.
The Epsilon line having crossed in the Fall of 2003 truly embodied the determination and perseverance of Beta women. The six unique women of "Raeka-Unida" continued the Radiant legacy of the women before them. Raeka-Unida stands tall and will continue to uphold the exceptional reputation that Omega Phi Beta and Theta Chapter is known for in Stony Brook University.
Fall 2004 was Ikai-Zali’s time to shine when 3 determined women used their eternal strength to preserver among the rest.
Spring 2005 made Theta Chapter Herstory as the first Solo crossed. Lanakila’s physical and mental strength surpassed all expectations and showed that with heart and dedication anything can be done.
In the Fall of 2005, Theta chapter crossed another line of six Radiant women into the Sisterhood. A strong and united line, Nkruma O'koa faced the waves of change as Greek Life at Stony Brook was in the midst of transformations. Despite these challenges they were able to show Stony Brook how brilliant a Beta's shine really is.
Theta chapter will continue to grow exemplifying the goals, beliefs, and convictions held by Omega Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated.
Chapter Cause: Domestic Violence Awareness
The founding members of Theta chapter adopted Domestic Violence as their mission because in the wake of this social catastrophe the issue was rarely discussed and many incidences of violence on campus had been virtually ignored. Whether it had been a mother or father, a sister or brother, an aunt or uncle, or even a friend; the sisters of Theta chapter had personally witnessed and been effected by Domestic Violence. Omega Phi Beta became their forum and their platform for educating and enlightening the community about this important social problem. We strive to educate our community through numerous programs throughout the year, such as our annual Domestic Violence Banquet, which is an evening dedicated to honoring the survivors and victims of Domestic Violence. All proceeds for the event are donated to shelters for battered women and children.
