Chapter History
The journey all began in 2002. After only her second semester at the University of Southern California, Patricia Chacon quickly caught on to importance of student life and becoming involved. Never thinking she fit the typical "sorority type" she still wanted to become part of an organization she could be proud of and work hard for. Unfortunately, she did not feel as though the organizations on that campus suited her personality or what she believed in. She would not settle and decided that bringing an organization on campus was not such a bad idea. It wasn't long before she came cross Omega Phi Beta on a popular Latino Greek website; she was highly impressed by what Omega Phi Beta stood for and decided contacted them. Excited to find out more about this sorority she grabbed her bags and flew to NY that winter to meet members of OPBSI and attend a national informational.
Welcomed into the homes of the ladies of Sigma Chapter and their Dean, she instantly saw their bond and respect towards the organization. She flew back to CA ready to make things happen. In the meantime Audrey Pumariega (FL), Amna Mazin (IL), Zulieka Gallo (CA), Rebecca Slivka (OH) and Eve Torres (CO) were all preparing to make the move to sunny southern California for their freshman year at USC.
Crossing paths in many different ways they all came together for one goal. All six women became very dedicated to bringing a change onto their campus that they knew would positively impact Greek life and would benefit the campus in the long run. All very passionate about bringing diversity to the forefront, they knew their 13 nationalities combined would show diverse unity at its best. It would take some time and a lot of work but they knew they wanted to part of this strong sisterhood.
"I wanted to be part of a close-knit sisterhood whose members were strong women who reflected OPBSI's highest ideals." – Audrey Pumariega
It wasn't long before they took USC and the west coast by storm. They were the first Latina organization to Probate on their campus and because Omega Phi Beta brought a lot of east coast traditions to the west, it caught many by surprise. Proud of their struggle and all the hard work that had gone into bringing this organization to campus, they stood up for what they believed in and worked hard to get their deserved respect.
The chapters chartering members quickly became know for their involvement on campus and their outgoing personalities. Their hard work especially paid off when they became the first Latina organization in USC history to win the community service award at the university's all council's Greek awards. Not only was the chapter involved in the community, but they also loved to have fun, the women of Phi became well known for their many victories in stroll competitions in California.
To this day the chapter continues to bring great programming to their campus. They are involved in several community services a semester, great social programming and stay strong as the first and only chapter of Omega Phi Beta on the West coast.
