Chapter/Colony of the Month: June 2008

Congratulations to the sisters of Lambda Chapter for being recognized as Chapter of the Month for June 2008, who finished the academic year with a slew of great programing. Their program, Women of the Young Lords, had an amazing crowd of 75 Brooklyn College students and administrators, while their annual Mother's Day Dinner had over 110 people in attendance. Despite all this, they were also successful in fulfilling 81 community service hours specifically geared towards the Aids Walk.

Chapter History

After hard work and determination, the LEGEND of Lambda Chapter began...

The absence of a Greek-lettered organization that could serve, educate, and provide support to women of color, particularly Latinas at Brooklyn College demonstrated an enormous unmet need on campus. In early 1998, a few women came together to strategize a way of establishing a support system that would encourage self-empowerment, promote community service and leadership, and create an impervious bond among women. The solution: Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

By the fall of 1998, two women began the journey into the radiant light. On December 20th, 1998, the Legendary Lambda Chapter was born. Omega Phi Beta was and still is the first and only latina-oriented sorority on the Brooklyn College Campus. Lambda Chapter has set further precedent by being the first undergraduate chapter of Omega Phi Beta established in the New York City metropolitan area.

Lambda Chapter upholds the goals of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. with great pride and dignity and has always played an active role in the campus community. Since its inception, Lambda Chapter has taken part in various campus, city and nation-wide events such as: "First Monday: Day Against Gun Violence", the "GMHC AIDS Walk-a-thon", an annual "Tribute to Mothers Dinner" and the "Candle-Light Vigil for Victims of Domestic Violence".

Most recently, Lambda Chapter was award the first recipient of the Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Image Award for our continued dedication to "Sirviendo y Educando a traves de Nuestra Diversidad."

Chapter Cause: Domestic Violence Awareness

Domestic Violence is a crime that crosses the barriers of age, race, religion, nationality, gender and sex. This is why Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. chose to embrace this cause as our National Philanthropy. Within our sisterhood, every chapter has their individual causes as well ranging from AIDS, Breast Cancer, Lupus, etc… but Lambda Chapter felt a strong need to maintain Domestic Violence as our chapter cause.
