Gamma Chapter
Est. 1991
Chapter History
In the Spring semester of 1991, the Gamma Chapter of Omega Phi Beta
Sorority, Incorporated was established representing the first
latina-oriented organization at Union College. After attending an
informational at the State University of New York at Albany, a small
group of Union students saw an opportunity to set precedent at Union
College and in the community at large. Gamma Chapter was established on
the basis of a fulfilling a need to enhance diversity on campus; to
serve and educate the community at large; and create a supportive
network of women from all walks of life. Hence, Omega Phi Beta Sorority,
Incorporated Gamma Chapter has evolved into a "home away from home," a
place that celebrates diversity and promotes professionalism, academic
and personal excellence.
Chapter Cause: Child Welfare
The Sisters of Gamma Chapter have chosen Child Welfare as its
chapter cause. The impact of exposing children and adolescents to college
and to the overall academic experience cannot go unnoticed. We believe
that the positive well being of a child is, in part, determined by the
level of education that child receives. Thus, Gamma Chapter's efforts
primarily revolve around reaching out to the youth living in the
surrounding communities of Union College. Briefly, Sisters often
volunteer their services as tutors, invite students onto Union College
campus, organize book drives, and participate in the local Big
Brothers/Big Sisters programs in the Schenectady community.
